Between art and technology, the green project CO2morrow gathers and visualizes greenhouse gases data on a nine-meter tall interactive sculpture. The sculpture will be exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Co2morrow is a green project on climate change awareness. It consists of two phases: the first one gathers greenhouse gases data through four sensor towers located for this initiative in the United Kingdom. The second one visualizes the greenhouse gases data on an interactive sculpture, made of carbon fiber, aluminium, LEDs, and structurally inspired by the scrubber molecule, which is appointed to catch carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the air. The piece will be placed at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, from December 1st to January 31, at the event Earth: Art of a Changing World. Afterwards it will be shown at various National Trust properties as in an ongoing exhibition. At the end of the sculpture's life cycle, Karborek, a world leader in the composite recycling process, based in Martignano, Puglia, Italy, will redesign and recycle the materials and have them reused in a new piece. The data gathered will be used by the climate scientist Andrew Manning from University of East Anglia, UK, to research on greenhouse gases effects. CO2morrow was commissioned by the National Trust and sponsored by Siemens that provided the sensor towers and the lighting. Simon Jenner, owner of Full Bar Composite, leader in carbon fiber structures, has donated the fabrication of the sculpture.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The Accademia owns , on the ground floor, a Reception Room able to welcome 150 people and built in mid nineteenth century in the neoclassical taste; on the first floor, there is a Room dedicated to Paolo Mascagni, a scientist from Siena, popular throughout Europe for his studies on anatomy at the end of the XVIII century, and the Library, that contains more than 6.000 volumes, most of them on natural sciences from the XVII century to the XIX.

The Project

When, in 1996, the Museum became part of the Musei Senesi, a large amount of renovation was required. The architect Adriano Perra first, and then the architect Roberto Castellani renewed the expositive areas, developed and renovated the Museum and the Accademia of Fisiocratici to make it suitable for didactic and cultural purposes. The project was divided into two stages: at the first stage it built a vertical connection to make the structure accessible to the disabled and a Didactic Centre, polyfunctional and interactive. Then, at a second stage, it built a new library and covered the yard with a glass roof to make it suitable for exhibits.

The entire basement, whose space is undervalued and used as a warehouse, has been renovated and directly connected to the main entrance of the Accademia, adding, in this way, another level to the museum.

During the renovation work, in the basement, ancient caves, excavated from the tuff, were discovered and connected to the old warehouse. The result was a strong sequence of heterogeneous spaces, characterized by the striking differences of the various levels, but, at the same time, linked through a fluid track that emphasizes the complexity of space organization of the museum.

The latest works are the restoration and the widening of the expositive rooms dedicated to the scholar and scientist Paolo Mascagni. The space in the room is freed by the old superfetations giving a new value to the trusses, almost dematerializing the heavy cover of the room. The project of the new spaces thoroughly illustrates the ability of an ancient building to accept new uses. The goal is to create a unitary system, easy to understand but, at the same time, well-constructed and narrative. The space is continuous, with no interruptions: the architectural elements introduced, necessary for the reuse of the building, are considered like objects inserted into the historical building, they do not damage the old structure, do not interfere either with the building systems or with the already exisiting material.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; was recently shown at the Royal Academy of Arts, London at the exhibit: 'eARTh: Art of a changing world' and is now going to be on show at Seaton Delaval Hall.
This singular property is a Grade I listed country house located near Blyth. it was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1718 for Admiral George Delaval.

Interactivity In terms of CO2morrow's relationship to the idea of Interactive Architecture, all too often one thinks about immediate feedback loops based on gesture and technology as well systems that respond directly to local conditions such as sun/shade, etc.
Although CO2morrow does involve a relatively down-to-earth method of using data and feeding them into a visual array to promote awareness of 'Climate Change' CO2 levels in the atmosphere, the real interactivity happens on a bigger feedback loop:
what I would call 'Extra-active Architecture'.
These kinds of feedback loops are altogether longer and larger than say a sensor which changes the shutters on the outside of a building. The feedback loops in CO2morrow's case are to do with man's effects on weather and how these come to impact architecture in the longer term. Our project was inspired by Sarah Staniforth's research on the impact of Climate Change on National Trust properties, and reflecting this concern, the NT sponsored our project.
This kind of 'extra-active' architecture is something that needs to be considered increasingly, as we discover that that the projects we embark on have a myriad of different longer term feedback loops and effects.
From a conceptual point of view, we can imagine a time-line upon which we can chart the different types of interactivity, ranging from the immediacy of a glass door sliding open when someone approaches, to the medium term programming of Seasonal Adjustments in heating or plant watering cycles in a building development, to the longer term loops of, say, human-made pollution to climate change to its impact on buildings.
In short, Interactive Architecture is a kind of anticipation of dynamic behaviours revolving around built structures, and in CO2morrow's case we are encouraging the perspective of interactive design to be raised to include longer time spans and powerful feedback loops that sometimes lie almost beyond our capacity to control or corral them.

ML May 2010

Sponsors
PRESENTING SPONSOR: National Trust
Tom Freshwater, Contemporary Arts Programme Manager
Catherine Atkinson, Property Manager, Seaton Delaval Hall

TECHNICAL SPONSOR: Siemens &
